Each year, thousands of wonderful dogs languish in shelters because their breeds' bad reputations caused them to be passed over by prospective adopters.
Many others are abused by cruel and ignorant owners who want these dogs only because of a "dangerous" reputation, and are bound and determined to make sure their pets live up to it; those who don't measure up are thrown away like garbage.
Still others are maimed or killed in cruel, barbaric, and ILLEGAL dogfights for the sake of gambling or sheer morbid entertainment.
Lastly, each year a few dogs who have been bred or trained to live up to a vicious reputation are involved in otherwise-preventable attacks, causing injury or death to humans. These tragic events are invariably given much publicity, helping to reinforce the misconceptions already surrounding these animals.
If you are an animal lover, or someone whose life has been enriched by loving -- and being loved by -- one or more of these Dogs of Disrepute, this site is for you.

CHARLOTTE was recently saved from a miserable existence. She had spent most of her 10 months of life locked in a cage, infested with parasites and afflicted with urine burns, so emaciated that she looked more like a Doberman than a pit bull. She could barely use her hind legs due to a traumatic injury caused by abuse, and the problem was compounded by muscle atrophy resulting from severe malnourishment. A local friend of BAD PRESS removed Charlotte from her dreadful situation and placed her with Camp Papillon Pet Adoption and Rescue in Monroe County. She is now in a special foster home in Connecticut and her health is improving, but she will need a hip replacement and hydrotherapy to regain the use of her hind legs. Expenses are expected to top $8000 (the surgery alone will be about $5,000).
LUCY was rescued from horrible conditions in Bogota, Colombia. She had been used as a breeder -- her cruel owner had actually pulled out some of her teeth so that she could not defend herself against the numerous male dogs with which she was forced to mate. At some point during her 3 1/2 years she suffered a beating so severe that her nose and jaw were broken; although they have since healed, the bones were not reset properly, resulting in her current appearance. She had escaped and was living on the streets, pregnant and starving, when a rescuer found her. Neighbors revealed that she had also been used as a bait dog for training fighters. Upon examination by a veterinarian, it was discovered that Lucy's uterus was twisted, and an emergency hysterectomy was required to save her life. Lucy is now in the United States under NY-based rescue group Stray from the Heart, and is being fostered by the same expert trainer and animal lover who is fostering Charlotte. Whether or not her face can be fixed remains to be seen, but it's hoped that surgery will at least make her a bit more comfortable.
BAD PRESS is collecting donations toward veterinary care for these two dogs. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to help them! All donations placed via the PayPal "Donate" button at the right will be routed into a special "Charlotte & Lucy" fund and forwarded to the two rescue groups sponsoring these dogs.
